Nutritional labeling analysis regulations of food products regulations were initiated over 25 years ago, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) started regulatory activities directed toward the development of regulations for nutritional labeling analysis. In 1973, the FDA published the first regulations that required the nutrition labeling of certain foods: those with added nutrients and those for which a nutrition claim was made on the label, or in labeling or advertising. However, it wasn’t until the 1990’s that regulations promulgated under the authority of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA) expanded mandatory nutrition labeling to virtually all foods regulated by FDA.
In May 2016, the FDA published the final rules for the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to include additional scientific information, such as the link between diet and chronic diseases, allowing consumers to make better informed food choices. It also reflected serving sizes of foods, dual-column labeling, and updating, modifying, and establishing certain reference amounts customarily consumed.
