Microbiology Lab
The Microbiology Lab at GPAL is a state-of-the-art laboratory space. The design is such that every consideration has been given to maintain the wholesomeness of the sample, ensure the safety of our employees and surrounding environment, and to provide results to our clients using the most modern technologies in the shortest times possible. The Microbiology Lab is designed to prevent a no-way back approach for the samples. This approach is used to prevent any possible cross- contamination from happening within the Microbiology Lab.
Samples are first received and logged in an area that is removed from the Microbiology Lab, itself. These same samples are then transported through a corridor having positive pressure to the sample setup area. Simultaneously, from another separate area within the Microbiology Lab, media and buffers are made and sterilized. This separate area has glassware, reagents and the autoclaves needed to sterilize the media before use. Samples and test media then come together in the sample setup area where the testing is initiated. Plated samples are then passed into one side of a 2-sided incubator. Following incubation, plated samples are removed from the other side of the incubator, thereby preventing any backtracking of the samples. Upon completion of the testing, product to be discarded is then taken out of the Microbiology Lab, through another door. This is located at the back of the Microbiology Lab where it is autoclaved and discarded. This sample flow is specifically designed to prevent contamination as a result of products other than your own.
We perform pathogen testing, indicator organism monitoring, allergen determination, as well as water testing. Table 1 lists all of the pathogens we currently test for using rapid genetic based methods:
Listeria species | Top 7 STECS | E. coli O26 | E. coli O111 |
Listeria monoctyogenes | Top 6 non-O157 STECS | E. coli O45 | E. coli O121 |
Salmonella | E. coli O157-H7 | E. coli O103 | E. coli O145 |
The common pathogen tests are performed using either BioControl GDS real-time PCR or BAX melting curve PCR, and confirmation can be performed on the Neogen ANSR Linear amplification machine.
In addition to pathogens and indicator organisms, we also test for viability of probiotic organisms. Some of these include B. coagulans, BC30, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, Bacillus, enterococcus, and Bifidobacterium.
We take great pride in our Microbiology Lab and would welcome the opportunity to show you what quality testing and quality results look like.
